Method

A while back we visited Bill Jacobi’s hillside studio to video and photograph some promo footage and stills for Method. (That’s Bill on acoustic guitar and Frank Corby on the drums.) Bill will be putting the video together himself, so that will be another blog when its done. But here are a few of the stills from the day. If you’d like to check out their music - highly recommend you do - here’s a link to another video.

Songs of Haight Ashbury at Byron Bay Brewery

In December we followed the Songs of Haight Ashbury to the Byron Bay Brewery for another jaw-dropping show! It felt like the audience weren’t sure what to expect and there were several points in the show when it suddenly accelerated to another level and people were looking at each other in amazement. Once again I had tears streaming down my face as Lil’ Fi channelled Janis Joplin for us - while I was still taking photographs! Diana Anaid was absolutely mesmerising as Grace Slick with what I felt was a stronger interpretation than the original songs. Well done to everyone and to Rainbow Region Gigs. Look out for this show as they tour Australia this year.
Here’s a few of our photos from the show:

Jerome Williams

Late last year we had this photo shoot for the amazingly talented Jerome Williams to create some great promo shots for him. If you’ve never heard him your jaw will drop. He and three other young musicians will be performing at Songwriters on the Songline on Feb. 4th down in Uki. In this shoot we tried to capture that “edge of town”, “urban boy / nature boy” look that we felt captured Jerome. Hope you get to hear him sometime soon!

Andrew's got the Blues

We were engaged the other day to do some promotional shots for Andrew Baxter. As well as being a good-looking guy he is a fantastic blues musician as well as the organiser of some amazing Blues concerts including one at Stokers Siding yesterday: Here is an Echo article about him.

Unity Festival - bigger and better

Here’s a taste of this years Unity Festival, held in Murwillumbah last Saturday. The weather gods and goddesses smiled on us, the food and music was great and the atmosphere was really sweet and cruisy. We had a great time but sore feet by the end of it! If you’d like to see more, go to our client galleries.

Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music 2011

This years festival was a fabulous event - many people said it was the best ever! We had the pleasure of being their official photographers again. Musical highlights for us were performances by Ben Austin (one of the young virtuosi) the Cello Orchestra and of course the Camerata of St. Johns including the amazing world premiere of Tyalgum Dawn, a piece composed by Ann Carr-Boyd as a commission for this 20th Anniversary of the Festival. Kacey Patricks improvised voice solo still brings tears to our eyes. And here are some of our favourite photos from the weekend. If you’d like to see more go to our client galleries.

Photo shoot with Miss Ivy Lucille

We had been looking forward to shooting with Ivy for quite a while and it all came together for a promo shoot she wanted to do. We tried to highlight the drama and theatre of Ivy’s performance style as well as to show her edgier side. No softly diffused light modifiers for this girl!

Songs of Haight Ashbury

Man! Another fantastic show - we are so fortunate to be living and working in the middle of such talent! The performances from Lil’ Fi, Bill Jacobi, Diana Anaid, Andrea Soler and Jonathon Harvey Nick Hanlon and the whole crew were breathtaking, rocking and nostalgic all at once. James T from Canned Heat guest starred as himself while others channeled the great ground-breaking artists of the 60’s. Check out Rainbow Region Gigs for more. So many great moments make it hard to choose our favourite photos, so here are more than a few! To see more photos go to: www.viportraitsandweddings.com/photocart

Ayesha Gough at the piano

Ayesha Gough is a very talented young pianist from Murwillumbah. we recently did this photo shoot for her, to create images to promote her upcoming concert “Chrysalis” and other performances. Here is the resulting poster, beautifully designed by Hetti McDonald. (Plus a few other of our favourites from the day.) For more on local classical music events, have a look at the Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music site. The festival is coming up in September.

Mantlepeace at Sphinxy

Last Sunday saw us all having a great time up at the Sphinx Rock Cafe at Mt. Burrell. Mantlepeace were there launching their new album Answers Tree. Their beautiful warm-hearted songs and sounds soon had the crowd up dancing. A heavy shower of rain just brought us all closer together under the covered area and made for some interesting photos with the water pouring down.
Photos of the day are available at our client gallery.

Album shoot with Deya Dova

Late last year we had the great buzz of working with Deya on images for a remix album that is coming out soon. So we couldn’t show you any of the images until now. We had a great few hours and lots of laughs - unfortunately we can’t show you some of the wilder shots! For more info just go to www.deyadova.com.

A wonderful weekend at the Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music

Such a rich and full weekend of stunning performances, wonderful and friendly people as well as a visual feast! We were kept very busy trying to photograph every “nook and cranny” of the festival, as the piano tuner, Norman Appel, described it. As well, we were recording video and audio for the festival organisers, who should be congratulated for all their hard work and an amazing festival. Here are some of our favourite images - hundreds more can be viewed at the Client Galleries section of our website.

Tatiana Kolesova, the young Russian pianist with such a beautiful soul, was the headline act:

Some of the young virtuosi: Raphael Ebermann, Alison McKenzie, Ayesha Gough and Julien Rosendahl

Norman Appel, the piano and harpsichord tuner. Tania Frazer, who has been the principal oboe for Israel Opera and the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Katherine Philp and her beautiful cello

Gareth Belling of the Queensland Ballet

David Pereira, who was kindly standing in with the Australia Ensemble @ UNSW for the festival. We hope he’ll be back next year!

Noel Stallard and Jack Drake, two of the very entertaining bush poets, as part of a fringe event held at the St. Johns Anglican Church

Two images of the Queensland Conservatorium Brass Ensemble

The Camerata of St. Johns gave us an exhilarating concert as well as some of our favourite images. To see more, please go to the client gallery section of this website
- hope you can get a taste of what this fantastic festival gave to all of us.

Another great concert at the Uki Church

Another great night down at the beautiful timber-lined Uki Anglican church. We had never heard or photographed Jerome before. He is an amazing guitarist and only 19! Ivy was a fantastic entertainer once again. Alan caught this great shot of Loren, just before his set. The audience was extremely moved by the emotional range of his songs.

Classical Music

Although we have taken many photos of musicians over the years, not many have been of classically trained musicians. So we were delighted to have the opportunity to photography the flautist Carmelia MacWilliam, using our garden and our section of Smiths Creek as the backdrop. We are also the official photographers for the Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music which will run for the 3rd to the 5th of September this year. What a chance to be immersed in great music at the same time as exploring all the visual possibilities.
